Back to New York for another visit

They walked through the door, and it lead out to a street a few blocks from the warehouse where the team now trained.

Kate got out her cellphone, and texted a message, her other hand linked with Will's.

"Just letting Cassie and the others know we're on our way. Another example of modern technology, a lot quicker than trying to call across a town square, and longer distance," She held up the phone to show him the modern device.

He opens his mouth to say he doesn't want that at all, he'd rather hold on to her with both hands, but then hears the scream.

As fast he can, he runs after her, drawing his knife from his boot.

It was coming from an abandoned building, and Kate was already trying to get the door open. No time to get her costume on at this rate.

"It's locked!" She then took off her jacket, and wrapped it around her hands so she could punch a nearby window open. Then climbed inside, wincing at the cuts in her hands from broken glass, and got the door open for Will.

There was another scream, and words this time, "LET ME GO! NO!" It sounded pretty young.

Will takes a moment to stop as Kate opens the window then runs towards the voice, wishing that he had his horn for he knows how frightening the sound can be.

Instead he raises his voice, putting all his anger and fear at possibly losing Kate into it as he yells,

"If ye 'ave 'armed that lass by one 'air, the Devil willna know ye!!"

They ran inside, it was an old warehouse, and they had to actually go up the stairs.

Kate then came to a stop at the sight of a sweaty heavy set man who was hunched over with his pants down, toward a little girl. She looked barely in grade school, and who was tied to a ratty looking old fashioned bed with metal bedframe. There were stains on the mattress, some looked like old urine, some were maroon suggesting blood.

The girl just whimpered a little as the man turned to face them.

"What the hell are you doing here? Get the fuck out!" He started over toward them, but then she charged toward him.

"You sick bastard!" And elbowed him in the face as he tried to grab her.

Will barely pauses as he sees the man and as Kate attacks him one way, he attacks the other, twisting the man's arm behind his back and kicking his knees out,

"Free the lass, Kate! I'll deal with this filth."

And suddenly there's a knife at the man's throat and a dangerous light in Will's eyes as he speaks far too calmly,

"Do ye know that in my time, a man such as yerself would probably be flogged till 'e couldna stand then 'ung. Consider yerself lucky."

Kate didn't even try to stop Will this time. She carefully freed the girl from the ducttape bindings, and briefly reassured her.

"It'll be over soon, sweetie. We're getting you out of here."

Kate then came back to where Will was with the man. She just stepped over to him, and did two quick swift kicks to the criminal. One to the man's face as he fell to his knees painfully, and one to his gut.

"That was for her," And two more kicks, another to the gut, and another to his crotch "And that was for me, you miserable piece of shit."

"Need somethin' to bind 'em."

Will spots the duct tape and basically standing on the man, one foot on the mna's arm, he grabs the duct tape. Then with a quick ease, binds his arms and legs and his mouth, finally sheathing his knife,

"Ye'll na move till justice finds ye."

He's not sure what to do next but the fire hasn't left his eyes as he looks at the girl just shifts to something far, far older, Kate will know what to do.

Kate nodded approvingly at that, and got out her cellphone to call 911. The man was in too much pain to bother trying to free himself now.

She then went back over to the little girl who stared up at her nervously.

"It's ok, he's never going to hurt you again. I promise."

The little girl just stared up at them, and quietly asked, "Are you two heroes?"

Small weary smile, "Sometimes." She then offered her hand, "Come on, we'll wait for the police outside, all right?

The girl just nodded slowly, and took her hand.

Kate glanced back at Will, and offered her other hand, her blue eyes looking very old right now as well.

"Come on, Will."

Will doesn't say anything just slips his own hand into Kate's and squeezes it quite tightly as they head down the stairs and outside.

When they get outside, he's quiet and watches the girl, wishing he had something of use to say.

In time as the minutes stretch onward, he starts to sing a slow, gentle song his mother always sang to him of darkness and losing your way in a great forest but finding your way home in the end.

It did seem to help, and the little girl calmed down. Clearly liking the song.

It wasn't much longer that they heard the sirens and a couple of police cars pulling up in front of the building, while they waited around the side of it.

Kate gently urged her ahead, "Go on, they can help you now."

"Help me see Mommy and Daddy again?"

"That's right, go on ahead."

She smiled, and then hugged them both around the waists briefly.

"Thank you! And you sing pretty, mister!" She then ran off toward the police, and there was already an officer hurrying over to help her.

Kate quietly said, "We need to get out of here before they find us. Be asking too many questions. Let's go," She then tugged his hand so they run off the other way.

He gives the girl a small smile, "God go with ye, lass."

Then he follows Kate around the back to find someplace where they won't be seen.

They walk for a while just to be safe, he's not sure where they're going, but he hasn't let go of her hand.

When they finally get far enough away, the adrenaline wears off, and Kate just collapsed onto a doorway step. She then started to cry from pent up emotions for the past few hours, her head in her hands.

As soon as she stops and starts to cry, his arms are around her and he's gently running a hand through her hair,

"Shh, love, ye're safe an so's that lass."

She just cried for a few more minutes, her whole body shaking. She clung back to Will tightly.

"I'm sorry... please don't go. I've just been confused, I'm sorry."

"Shh, will ne'er leave ye 'less ye ask me to."

He hugs her just as tightly, finally lifting her face and kissing her tears away,

"I love ye, Kate."

"I love you, too," She murmured back, and just clung to him for a moment longer. Sniffling as the tears finally stopped.





"...God, some date, huh?" she weakly commented after a few more minutes, and rubbed her eyes some more.

He traces her face, wiping away the rest of her tears and kissing her face again,

"Tisna o'er yet, love. We'll find a way to make it better, promise. Now can ye stand?"

Kate nodded, and slowly went to stand up. Slightly shaky still, but she just took some deep breaths to try to calm and center herself again.

Still had a tight grip on Will's hand.

"Now ye're goin' to show me someplace that ye 'avena been to since ye were a lass an that makes ye smile, aye?"

He gives her hand a squeeze and her a gentle kiss on the lips while he dares a smile.

Kate then brightened at that and kissed him back this time, "Well, it has been a few years... And it's usually crowded. But you should see it. That, and there's another large toy store right by there with a ferris wheel inside."

She then tugged his hand, and there was a cab coming down the road. She flagged it down, and said to the driver, "FAO Schwartz please."

The brightening makes him smile a lot as does her kiss,

"Dinna think I've e'er been in a toy store."

In the cab he moves his arm so its around her waist.

Kate just stroked his hair some, and gave a brief look back at the driver who just glanced through the rear view at them both.

"Hey... aren't you?"

Kate simply replied to him, "Yes, and there's an extra 400 hundred if you don't mention it to anyone."

"Lady, for 400 bucks, I'd drive you wherever the hell you wanted to go and back."

She gave a smile at that, and then said to Will, "Well, you'll get to see both."

Will just smiles and moves under her hand,

"Would like that an 'rhaps can get somethin' to eat too. Were talkin' 'bout goin' to a show or somethin' later, do ye still wish to?"

"We could. There's any number of plays and musicals out there now to see. And you ever had an ice cream sundae before?"

Thinking they could get a really oversized one designed to be split for two.
