Back to New York for another visit

They walked through the door, and it lead out to a street a few blocks from the warehouse where the team now trained.

Kate got out her cellphone, and texted a message, her other hand linked with Will's.

"Just letting Cassie and the others know we're on our way. Another example of modern technology, a lot quicker than trying to call across a town square, and longer distance," She held up the phone to show him the modern device.

"We get along other times. Just tend to clash a lot. Enough to make some of the others think that means we were attracted to each other or something. We're going to argue, you can't expect me to be happy all the time. Don't put me on a pedestal, Will."

Kate added, "If you just want to call this a bust, and head back to the bar now, I'll understand."

Now he looks up at her and takes one of her hands,

"I know that, Kate, I do. Just sounded to me as if 'e was doubtin' ye was all, forgive me. An be worried if ye didna yell at me an dinna wish to give up on today. Just a bruise after all an least I've met 'im."

"He was, but he doesn't have room to talk really. And it's nothing I want to go into now."

She gripped his hand back, and tightened it almost painfully so for a moment before relaxing.

"You sure you're ok? If you're dizzy or feel like you're going to pass out at any time, I'm taking you straight back to the bar."

He squeezes her hand back and gently kisses it,

"Truly, I'm fine, love."

Then he slowly stands up, not letting go of her hand and bows to the others,

"Forgive me for bringin' ye such trouble an thank ye for yer 'elp."

Billy commented, "Actually? You really weren't. This is quiet for us."

Teddy nodded, "He means it, should see how it is when we're all here."

Kate waved to them, "I'll see you guys later."

Cassie waved, and commented, "Bye Will! It was nice meeting you! Hey, Kate, any chance he's got some cute friends back in the bar?"

Kate gave a small laugh, "Probably, but save it for another time." She then walked back outside with him.

"Well, hard to top that excitement now I guess," she bitterly replied when they were back outside.

When they're outside and away from the others, Will stops and gently takes Kate's face in his hands and kisses her.

The bruise is already forming on the side of his face and will be many interesting colors throughout the day,

"I love ye, Kate, an ye're worth it. Tis much o'the day left an we'll fill it with good things."

She was tense still, and there was barely a gesture of kissing back.

"I love you too, but you really infuriate me sometimes. Not sure if visiting a coffee shop would help. You shouldn't be more wired than you already are."

Will's not sure the best thing to do so puts his hands into his pockets while he looks at her,

"Could just walk for a time, see if that 'elps."

Kate sighed, "It is your fault before... but it's also Eli's. I should have known better with both of your personalities. Alike in all the wrong ways it seems."

"Walking's fine I guess. We're downtown right now. Don't know if you want to see some of the Village in that case." She started to walk along the sidewalk in fact.

He really has nothing to defend himself with and knows it won't help so just walks beside her, letting her lead and keeping his hands in his pockets.

Will would much rather hold her hand, but isn't going to try until she seems less unhappy,

"Really dinna know much o'anythin' that's round 'ere so whate'er ye wish to show me."

"I know, I just..." She kicked at the sidewalk with mild annoyance.

"I don't know what I want to do." Still wound up some from before, and it still bugged her.

He resists the urge to reach for her since that won't help anything and starts twisting the sleeve of his jacket while he walks,

"Could go to 'nother museum, then could 'ave time to just think an be quiet till ye're ready to deal with me 'gain."

Kate put a hand over her face, "No, I don't mind mean that. ...God, why do we have to be from such different times?"

Again he doesn't really have a proper answer and twists at his sleeve again,

"Cause we took a chance on each other."

"I know... and you're probably regretting it now right? I didn't want you to go through something like with Molly again. You deserve better than that."

His voice is tired and too old as he looks at her, his hand still twisting and twisting at his jacket sleeve,

"Na regrets, Kate, please dinna give up on me?"

Kate glanced up at him, "You think I would? Stubborn as I am? I mean, I don't know, maybe Eli's got a point. Been trying to juggle you, Milliways, the team, school, and it's a lot to deal with. Something has to give. I don't want to give up anything, I'm just not sure how much longer I can do it all."

Will is really missing his normal shirt, the sleeve ties are much better for twisting than this jacket,

"Aye, well, can give ye space if that's what ye wish."

Kate glanced up sharply, "Will, I... I don't know. I just wanted a quiet afternoon here with you." She rubbed her eyes a little.

"But we can go back, and find the door if you want..." she said, but a sudden loud scream sounded from a nearby building.

She immediately then went to run in the direction of it without thinking.

He opens his mouth to say he doesn't want that at all, he'd rather hold on to her with both hands, but then hears the scream.

As fast he can, he runs after her, drawing his knife from his boot.

It was coming from an abandoned building, and Kate was already trying to get the door open. No time to get her costume on at this rate.

"It's locked!" She then took off her jacket, and wrapped it around her hands so she could punch a nearby window open. Then climbed inside, wincing at the cuts in her hands from broken glass, and got the door open for Will.

There was another scream, and words this time, "LET ME GO! NO!" It sounded pretty young.

Will takes a moment to stop as Kate opens the window then runs towards the voice, wishing that he had his horn for he knows how frightening the sound can be.

Instead he raises his voice, putting all his anger and fear at possibly losing Kate into it as he yells,

"If ye 'ave 'armed that lass by one 'air, the Devil willna know ye!!"

They ran inside, it was an old warehouse, and they had to actually go up the stairs.

Kate then came to a stop at the sight of a sweaty heavy set man who was hunched over with his pants down, toward a little girl. She looked barely in grade school, and who was tied to a ratty looking old fashioned bed with metal bedframe. There were stains on the mattress, some looked like old urine, some were maroon suggesting blood.

The girl just whimpered a little as the man turned to face them.

"What the hell are you doing here? Get the fuck out!" He started over toward them, but then she charged toward him.

"You sick bastard!" And elbowed him in the face as he tried to grab her.

Will barely pauses as he sees the man and as Kate attacks him one way, he attacks the other, twisting the man's arm behind his back and kicking his knees out,

"Free the lass, Kate! I'll deal with this filth."

And suddenly there's a knife at the man's throat and a dangerous light in Will's eyes as he speaks far too calmly,

"Do ye know that in my time, a man such as yerself would probably be flogged till 'e couldna stand then 'ung. Consider yerself lucky."

Kate didn't even try to stop Will this time. She carefully freed the girl from the ducttape bindings, and briefly reassured her.

"It'll be over soon, sweetie. We're getting you out of here."

Kate then came back to where Will was with the man. She just stepped over to him, and did two quick swift kicks to the criminal. One to the man's face as he fell to his knees painfully, and one to his gut.

"That was for her," And two more kicks, another to the gut, and another to his crotch "And that was for me, you miserable piece of shit."
